HPer madsen26, who was brought to our attention by a reader, is one of the most aggressive users I've ever seen on the HP. He will call anyone who disagrees with him a racist, bigot, "garbage", etc. I assume the only reason he's still on the HP is because he shares the HP's politics of anti-Israel and pro-Arab. Matt, Here's how I see it. The HufPo's economic model is to get free and low-cost content by filling it pages with bloggers, posters, and news service articles that's constantly churning and renewing itself. This drives eyeballs to it's site and stimulates even more content. This content is highly segmented by topic to maintain this self-fulfilling perpetual motion machine. It's really rather clever!
ReplyDeleteArianna must be be laughing all the way to the bank to have us, her useful idiots, write her website at no cost/low cost. A segment of all this content is the Israel/Palestine topic and there is no doubt that if she broke it out by topic on her site this would be #1. Even with a good part of it being anti-Israel and anti-American hate speech she is not going to kill the goose that lays the golden egg. In fact, your efforts, even this site, plays into her "free content" hands.
So is there an alternative tactic that fights the hate speech that's realistic? It always amazes me that people like David Harris and Alan Dershowitz contribute to the HufPo - why? Because it "reaches a wider audience" in the hopes of educating and informing the great unwashed?? The day they and people like them say ENOUGH, I will stop posting comments there, and will join the call for a general strike. The HufPo must be given pariah status so that people are embarrassed to have their name associated with it. Leave it to the likes of MJ Rosenberg to wallow in it the filth of it's own making, not just striking against the I/P content, but all HufPo content, especially popular culture.
But wouldn't that leave the playing field to the anti-Semites? Who cares. "Stormfront" is all anti-Semitic does anyone care about it? It is up to us, the users of HuPo to re-frame it for what it is, and I bet as soon as the numbers shift just a bit Arianna will be "shocked, shocked that there is gambling going on in this casino".
Is this a viable scenario? If you agree and since the HufPo Monitor has the most visibility in the fight against hate on HufPo may I suggest you seriously consider formulating and leading the campaign to make this happen? Comments appreciated.

He is more to be pitied than scorned. He is a little man, and has no life. Of course he has to hate us, we are smarter, stronger, more productive, happier, and more successful than he can ever hope to be.
Califlefty you have a point, as a fighter against antisemitism, I would support such an effort. How do we go about organizing and moving it forward?
