In a rarity for the HP, it published an article that shows a Palestinian unwillingness to negotiate, in this case until Israel freezes settlement construction. While it is remarkable that an article is being published about Palestinians that show their side as something other than helpless victims, it is not surprising that the HPers agreed with the Palestinian refusal. They all decided to take the second step of the strength two step, since Israel is the "stronger" party it needs to make sacrifices for peace. The HPers forgot their narrative of Palestinians who are helpless victims and just want their own state. Oh well. Here's an example of HPer support for Palestinian preconditions (a dirty word when Israel sets them out):
Indeed, you would have to be "insane" to negotiate with Israel when settlements are being built. Until next week, when the Palestinians are just helpless victims who just want peace and a small state to call their own. Whichever talking point works best.

Funny Comment of the Day
This comment made me laugh, and I hope it makes you laugh too.
It's the little things that help you make it through the day.
The Ugly Future
It's becoming more and more common for Huffington Posters to talk down their noses at Israel declaring that "time is on our side." We've already discussed what can happen in the future a little bit, either in a humorous way or by quoting those who have crunched the numbers more than we have.
But sure, let's assume that everything goes exactly as the Palestinians expect them to, and in a hundred years the Palestinians outnumber the Israelis by a large margin and yet they are still living under occupation. At this point Palestinian supporters (and some Israelis) declare that Israel will have to be an apartheid state or form a "one state solution," so either way Israel's Jewish character is destroyed. But this is a fallacy of a false choice, because the Palestinian supporters don't think creatively enough.
Though I don't think Israel would just straight up and kill all of the Palestinians, they could potentially expel some of them or all of them to Jordan. Don't say that it is not a possibility, because it has already been discussed in some circles. Before you jump down my throat, don't assume that I am endorsing this potential course of action or saying that it's a good thing. I'm just saying that the Palestinians shouldn't naively assume that Israel will do exactly what they expect all the time, not when they can push back in a big way and solve this problem by brute force.
When you stop and think about it, who could stop Israel from doing this? Jordan? Israel can just conquer them. America? Maybe, but there isn't much that America would actually do to stop them, even if in 100 years the relations between the two countries have grown further apart than they are today. They might even be grateful that the conflict will finally end. The Arab states? They haven't gone to war for the sake of the Palestinians yet (no matter what their propagandists try to say ex post facto), and they won't in this case. Remember that as time goes by Israel is likely to become more powerful and populous, not less. The international community? They are good at talking big but when it comes time to actually put up or shut up they stay home. Just ask the Rwandans and the Darfurians.
Palestinian supporters will no doubt react with shock to this projection. They will declare, "No way! The world wouldn't let that go! They would sanction Israel! That would stop them?" But it wouldn't. How long has the United Nations been sanctioning Iran? Like five years? And North Korea? How has that worked out? And these are nations that don't even produce half the useful technology that Israel does.
So maybe you would say, "Israel wouldn't do that." Either because they are too moral, too cowardly, too weak, or whatever. But I say: An animal (and people are animals) are at their most vicious when pushed into a corner. If given the choice between mass expulsion, getting sanctioned to death for being an apartheid state (though even this is questionable), or committing national suicide, no Israeli leader is going to pick the option that results in the destruction of his state. That's just how it is, no matter how much we all might not like it. The Palestinians can't really be surprised that when they push Israel Israel will push them back. That's been their excuse for political violence for years.
Again, I'm not saying that this would be good or that I am in favor of this course of action. What I am saying is that these Palestinian leaders and supporters are being incredibly short sighted by thinking that they can dictate the direction the future will go. They are also being blind to other possibilities besides their worn out apartheid/one state dichotomy. And their foolishness will screw the region up more than America ever could.

HuffPost Causes a Hate Fest
You guys ready for some breaking news? Synagogues charge for tickets for High Holiday services! Just like many other religious groups ask for donations to keep their building going and their clergy funded. So when the Huffington Post made this a news story (for some reason) I'm sure someone up there was very happy to have caused the following comments to be posted and published.
Indeed, some things never change. Like the Huffington Post's dedication to Jew/Israel baiting.

The Weakest Palsbara
Are you familiar with the Huffington Post blogger Pippa Barlotelli? No? Well, according to her bio she is a "peace and justice campaigner" who is called "mujhadeen" in Syria. Ooookay. Anyway as mentioned she writes for the Huffington Post and even for them is pretty left wing and anti-Western. Her latest article is complaining about the UN vote about the Palestinian UDI, which takes on two aspects. Here's the first:
The entire rest of the article is basically copied and pasted from "If Americans Knew." Seriously, this is what it looks like:
Population 5.5 million Jewish 11 million Palestinian(7M refugees)
Overall Land Controlled 91.7%Israel 8.3%Palestinian
Military Personnel 175,000 0
Reserves 500,000 0
Irregulars 10-15,000 3-5,000
Tanks 3,800 0
Artillery 1,500 large 0
Warships 20-30 0
Submarines 6 0
Go to the actual article and see for yourself. It's the laziest piece of writing I've ever seen on the Huffington Post. Still, the readers are giving it the attention it deserves, which is why it has received no comments. As Palsbara goes, this is pretty weak.
"Nevertheless a recent opinion poll from the Pew Research Centre shows that 42% favour the US recognising Palestine as an independent nation, with 26% against. Nearly a third (32%) expressed no opinion. The US veto obviously does not represent he American people, only the American elite."Um, this seems like number crunching. It doesn't sound like Americans are speaking with one voice about this issue. She's correct that more Americans are in favor of Palestinian recognition than are against it, but neither side possesses a majority opinion. So if the American government has to pick one view or the other on this, then they probably won't be going to the people about it. Instead, they'd be going to their own political interests. So I guess if Ms. Barlotelli wants to sound like a happy and rephrase that as "American elite," then go for it. But it doesn't sound so convincing me to.

Another Comment of the Day
The Huffington Post couldn't wait to cover a storyabout (drumrull) settlements yesterday, and the Huffington Post readership quickly formed the Internet equivalent of a lynch rob in rage that will never been seen about any other topic.
Admittedly an obvious spammer speaking in all caps comparing Israelis to Nazis is hardly new ground for the Huffington Post. What made this one worth sharing was not only the call for violence against settlers, as well as the five favorites. We'll see how long it stays up.

Latest Biased Headline
This was the "World" section yesterday:
I find it very very unlikely that this story was the most important story of the day, especially given the story about Yemen on the right. And the picture is a nice form of bias too, flag-waving Israelis is not a common sight on the Huffington Post, though when they do use it it's always in a negative fashion.
Naturally the thread itself sparked a hatefest we haven't seen in a number of weeks. Guess the stumbling UN bid is leaving the Huffington Posters with nowhere else to channel their rage.

Netanyahu Goes to NYC, Conspiracy Theorists Go to the HuffPo
The Huffington Post's "New York" section had a short story about Benjamin Netanyahu and Michael Bloomberg traveling to the 9/11 memorial while Netanyahu was in New York for the United Nations. Immediately the Huffington Posters sprang out of their holes to accuse Israel of being behind the attacks (as well as yelling at Netanyahu for some comments he made about them, which is fair). As of yet not one of these comments have been deleted. Click to zoom in:

Ru Freeman's Disinformation
Veteran Huffington Post blogger Ru Freeman has finally added yet another unnecessary article to the multitude of posts about the Palestinian UDI. A reader suggested that we check it out as the amount of misinformation there is high even by Huffington Post standards.
To begin with, Ms. Freeman takes her turning beating the dead horse that is the Mamilla Cemetery controversy. Citing a Youtube video as her source, she continues to push the lie that Israel is destroying a cemetery to build the Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance, even though it was debunked months ago. But fortunately she doesn't stick to it very long, only showing it as "an irony that exemplifies the conundrum." I prefer to think of it as a half truth that sets the tone for an article as a whole.
From there she talks about Obama (of course) and how he didn't immediately take the Palestinian side in everything (of course) before proceeding to a ridiculous rewrite of history:
So having rewritten history to fit the Palestinian narrative of "helpless silenced victims," and by justifying Palestinian terrorism because of what "Zionists" did decades ago, she then launches into full on victim mode:
Her anti-Israel rant continues with more one sided history. The "Zionism is racism" resolution in the UN is mentioned without condemnation or comment, but its renunciation is not. Sabra and Shantila is mentioned but the role of the Christian Phalange is not. And of course she blames the Second Intifada entirely on Sharon visiting the Temple Mount, even though history has clearly proven what Ms. Freeman would find to be an inconvenient truth. Keep reading, because it gets worse.

"The people of Palestine have undergone centuries of external pressure if not always occupation -- from the Israelite, the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Iraqi, Egyptian, Turkish and British forces to name a few -- and history has proved that, when push came to shove, the Palestinian voice was repeatedly silenced. Nobody asked them for their thoughts when Theodor Hertzl advocated for a Jewish State.."Quick question. Who exactly does Ms. Freeman think "the Palestinians" are? Is she not aware that they are the descendants of the Arab armies who invaded in the 700s? Because they are, and will proudly tell you of their brotherhood with their fellow Arabs. So as usual it is ironic that she says the Israelites "occupied Palestine" before it even was Palestine, and therefore occupied the Palestinian Arabs, even though there were no Palestinian Arabs there to occupy. Her writing indicates a level of ignorance or a level of dishonesty that is unusual even by Huffington Post standards.
So having rewritten history to fit the Palestinian narrative of "helpless silenced victims," and by justifying Palestinian terrorism because of what "Zionists" did decades ago, she then launches into full on victim mode:
"In 1963 the PLO constitution was drafted at a summit of Arab states in Cairo, although it took another 11 years for the UN and the Arab League to recognize the PLO as the sole representative of the people of Palestine. In 1967 the work of the Zionists was done with the complete occupation of the rest of Palestine."The reference to the people of Israel as "the Zionists" continues throughout the whole article by the way. So notice how she doesn't tell us inconvenient facts about the PLO in 1963: Namely that they didn't consider the West Bank and Gaza to be "Palestine" but only Israel was "Palestine." But then in her next sentence we see that not only does she fully swallow that Israel wanted to conquer the West Bank all along, but that Israel itself is an occupation. This seems to be confirmed elsewhere in the article where she declares that "the Palestinians do not occupy even a quarter of their own country." In other words, Israel is really the Palestinians' country. Not seeing much daylight here between what Ms. Freeman is saying and what a Hamas propagandist might say.

News the HP Doesn't Cover: Abbas Fact Check
The Huffington Post definitely won't be covering this story from Associated Press:
(AP) JERUSALEM — In his historic speech to the United Nations, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas eloquently laid out the case for granting his people an independent state. But in doing so, he presented a narrative that is disputed by Israel, and in at least one case, appeared to be factually incorrect.
Here is a look at the counterarguments to Abbas' claims:
OCCUPATION: Abbas called Israel's control of the territories claimed by the Palestinians "the only occupation in the world."
THE FACTS: The world is full of ethnic minorities that might claim to be ruled by occupiers, ranging from Tibetans living under Chinese rule to Kurds in Turkey, Basques in Spain, Chechens in Russia and Muslim separatists in Indian-ruled Kashmir.Read the whole thing.

This comment is typical of the Palestinian supporter mindset: If I do X, as long as I claim X helps the Palestinians, X is not wrong/illegal/a crime. You have to wonder how far the mindset goes, if it applies only to minor crimes like silencing an Israeli representative, or goes all the way up to murder and theft.

News the HP Doesn't Cover: Israel's Population Growth
The new census statistics are in, might make for interesting reading:
On the eve of Rosh Hashana (the Jewish New Year) the Israeli population consists of some 7,797,400 residents: 5,874,300 Jews, 1,600,100 Arabs and approximately 323,000 defined as others, according to new data published by Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics on Monday.
The additional 217,000 foreign workers residing in Israel were not included in the statistics.
ccording to the CBS, in the passing year Israel's Jewish population grew by 1.7%, the Arab population by 2.5% and other sectors by 1.7%. The Muslim population rose by 2.7%, the Christian grew by 0.9% while the Druze population rose by 1.8%.
An above-average growth rate was recorded in Jerusalem (2.3%) and in central Israel (2.2%), while the Tel Aviv District showed the smallest population increase (0.6%).
Some 166,255 babies were born in the past year, an increase of 3.2% compared with 2009. The average number of children per household is 3.03, compared with 2.96 between 2008-2009.
The Israeli population is relatively young in comparison to Western nations. In 2010, some 28% of the population consisted of children aged 0-14, whereas in other Western countries the number is considerably lower - 17%.
Israel's elderly population has also increased, reaching 4.7% in 2010 compared with 3.8% in the early 1990s.
Throughout 2010, some 16,633 immigrants came to Israel – a 14% increase in comparison to 2009. The majority of immigrants originated from Russia (3,404), the United States (2,530), France (1,775), Ukraine (1,752) and Ethiopia (1,655).
The CBS also released data on the ultra Orthodox education system for the first time. The numbers showed that the amount of yeshiva students has risen by 28% since 1997 – from 108,228 to 138,249.

Irvine 11 Found Guilty, HPers Mostly Supportive
The Huffington Post covered the story of the conclusion of the trial for the so-called "Irvine 11" and the guilty verdict on two counts of "disrupting a meeting." I checked out the comments thread, and to my surprise most of the "top comments" were supportive of the verdict. Here's a sampling.
There were fifteen pages of comments so I didn't look at them all, but from what I saw most comments were in support of the verdict. Those that weren't wanted to know why tea partiers that disrupt town halls aren't charged or thought that because Oren was "an agent of the Zionist regime" it was OK to shut down his speech.
It's nice to know that even on the Huffington Post, Palestinian supporters can still sometimes be wrong.

Sandy Tolan Thinks We're Stupid
Did you ever read or see "The Lemon Tree?" The author of the book, Sandy Tolan, has now put his pen back to work on the Huffington Post. And his latest article shills one of the most common leftist myths about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict:
As for the rest of the article, it is basically a regurgitation of anti-Israel talking points along with the Palestinian narrative and pseudo history. For example, the Second Intifada was not carefully planned by Yassir Arafat but a reaction to Ariel Sharon walking around on the Temple Mount. A common misconception, but a misconception nonetheless. Although it is mostly one sided, it is not completely so:
The article as a whole is the usual one sided narrative, which doesn't require any more attention, either from us or from the readership of the Huffington Post. No matter which side you're on, you've heard it all before.
"For the moment, whatever happens in the coming weeks at the U.N., and in the West Bank in the aftermath, isn’t it time for the world’s focus to shift to what is actually happening on the ground? After all, it's the occupation, stupid."Sorry, but no one who has read a history book knows that not only was there fighting before the occupation (which Mr. Tolan refers to as going on for 45 years, fyi) but that the occupation of the West Bank alone has never been what motivates Palestinian militants. Just ask them. Yes, we know that "End the occupation" is the endless Palestinian and leftist mantra, but thankfully those in positions of power know that it is more complicated than that. I actually wish that the Palestinians would make it even more clear that they consider Tel Aviv to be just as occupied as Bethlehem (or not), because then we could actually get somewhere.
"As an apt example, consider the morally and strategically bankrupt tactic of suicide bombings, carried out from 2001 to 2004 by several Palestinian factions as a response to Israeli attacks during the second intifada. That disastrous strategy gave cover to all manner of Israeli retaliation, including the building of the separation barrier."How informative. Yes suicide bombings are morally bad but it doesn't tell you anything about the Palestinians who commit them, or their motivations. And besides what's really bad about them is that it gave Israel a good excuse for doing things Mr. Tolan doesn't like. Naturally we get this as well:
"(The near disappearance of the suicide attacks has been due far less to the wall -- after all, it isn't even finished yet -- than to a decision on the part of all the Palestinian factions to reject the tactic itself.)"Ha ha ha. It continues to mystify me that people like Mr. Tolan seriously expect us to believe that the above quoted Hamas for example just by coincidence decided to stop using one of their most effective terror tactics against Israel in the same places that the security barrier was being built. Yes, okay, sure. Sorry, but I'm not that gullible.
The article as a whole is the usual one sided narrative, which doesn't require any more attention, either from us or from the readership of the Huffington Post. No matter which side you're on, you've heard it all before.

HuffPo Blogger: "Ahmadinejad is Not A Pariah"
"It is a sad state of world affairs when there is only one person who takes the UN and its handful of leaders to task when given the opportunity. It is an even sadder state of affairs that one man's words will change nothing for the powerless, poor and devastated majority of this world who suffer from those leaders' sins."It would be grossly misleading to say that Shirin Sadeghi (former producer of the BBC and Al Jazeera)'s blog post on the Huffington Post defends Iran's President Ahmadinejad, but it's more along the lines of "I don't like what he has to say, and I don't like him personally, but he does make a few good points, so we should listen to him." Think I am misinterpreting her?
"But Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is audacious and a voice that should be paid attention to because it has a great deal of influence."Tell you what. Fine. We'll see what he has to say besides the Holocaust didn't happen, Israel should be destroyed, and the US was responsible for 9/11, even though any one of those things should make him a laughingstock on the world stage.
"Only from him will you hear a reference to historical global colonialism. Only from him will you hear that the descendants of slaves in the United States should be given reparations. Or that the atomic bomb was a travesty of humanity and a war crime that remains unaddressed and unresolved."Really? Only Ahmadinejad will say this stuff? Because I'm pretty sure Chomsky alone has covered all of those topics in his last interview alone. And furthermore, how is discussing "historic global colonialism" a breaking issue deserving of the world's attention. Oh no wait I got it, Ahmadinejad wants the West to grovel before him and say "I'm sorry" (sort of like Chomsky by the way). Beyond the simple hypocrisy in the way Iran treats its own people, I'm pretty sure Islam is not native to historic Persia. Oh, and who is the one seeking to get an atomic bomb against the will of the international community? But hey, according to Ms. Sadeghi, these are all "legitimate points" that we should listen to.
As for the rest of the speech, according to Ms. Sadeghi it's pretty much all anti-Western rants, including chewing out the Europeans for the world wars that happened before most of them were born and moaning that America didn't take Osama in for trial. Really the only thing he said that wasn't anti-Western specifically was when he talked about global poverty and starvation. Though he was quick to blame the West for that as well.
Finally, shockingly, he criticized the United Nations. Why? Because he's not in charge of it. Again, don't get the impression that Ms. Sadeghi was praising or defending Ahmadinejad. But like so many Huffington Post bloggers before her, her column contained the attitude of "He's not a nice guy, but he says things that I agree with, so we should all listen to him." She'll fit right in there. Defending dictators shouldn't be a "liberal" thing, but not if you read the Huffington Post.

Steve Rosen Plays the Race Card, Insults Jews, and More
Veteran Huffignton Post blogger Steve Rosen is back doing what he always does: Bashing Israel, and this time using the race card to do it with his provocatively titled, "Obama Tells Palestinians To Stay In the Back of the Bus." The Palestinians and their supporters should thank their maker every day that there have been better people than them doing heroic things in the past. Otherwise they wouldn't have such proud legacies to leech off of and soil in their quest to destroy Israel. Anyway, Rosen's piece is incredibly long, and allegedly about President Obama's speech in general, so we won't be analyzing all of it. He doesn't get to the real race card/exploitation until the end, but in the meanwhile there are some statements worth sharing:
Next Rosen uses the very Republican tactic of simply blaming Obama for everything:
1. In case Rosen didn't notice, Hamas has already "risen." They won the elections in 2006 and it was only American armed and trained PA police that kept them from taking over the West Bank like they did Gaza. While we are reminding Rosen about basic facts, I will also remind him that Obama was not in office in 2006.
2. Palestinian violence has in fact predated Palestinian political goals, i.e. they were killing Jews before they even knew why they were killing them. Even our "moderate" Abbas has threatened to return to violence if he didn't get what he wanted.
3. And of course Abbas is hardly peaceful or moderate. Maybe by Palestinian standards he is, but certainly not by most peoples'. So to make up for these inconvenient facts, Rosen instead plays the race card:
He then takes a page out of Mearshimer's book and spells out the difference between the "good Jews" and the "bad Jews:"
"Obama continues to parrot the line that peace can only be achieved between the "two parties," that only they can really bring this global ulcer to a close, when they decide to negotiate."How exactly is that a "line," Rosen? Are you saying that the Palestinians can make peace with someone other than Israel? Like Japan for example? Or that Israel should just do whatever they want to the Palestinians instead of negotiation? Somehow I doubt it. Oh no wait I understand, because you are in support of this UN statehood stunt, you are therefore pretending to be against negotiations. Wow, what a confusing rhetorical contortion! Especially considering even Abbas said he would return to negotiations after the UN bid finished. Talk about being more Palestinian than the Palestinians.
"What if the US had said to Kosovo -- no statehood, no recognition from the US until you resolve all of your ongoing issues with Russia?"Well maybe because (a) Kosovo never intended to destroy all of Russia, while the Palestinians proudly tell you that all of Israel is "theirs" to be reclaimed and (b) Kosovo never signed an agreement saying they would take no unilateral measures only to tear it up 20 years later. I mean I'm no fancy shmancy journalist but even I know the history of the region better than Rosen does. He fits right in on the Huffington Post.
Next Rosen uses the very Republican tactic of simply blaming Obama for everything:
"Obama ...has assured the rise of Hamas, the legitimation of violence in pursuit of Palestinian political goals, by yet again showing that peaceful, non-violent moderates like Mahmoud Abbas ultimately get nothing..."Ha ha ha. What a freaking joke, admittedly not a particularly funny one. Time for some bullet points:
"Even if they play the role of the "good Palestinian," the one who listens to his masters, who doesn't get too disturbed when humiliated at Israel's border check points and at UN Security Council meetings."Cry me a river. Who would have imagined that blowing up almost a thousand Jews would lead to some sort of negative consequences? Obviously not Steve Rosen, whose column is full of these half-truths/entire lies which indicate not a knowledge of the situation but a devotion to Palestinian propaganda. Along with this is his claim that Abbas is moving "peacefully" toward his goals, like a Pandela. One little problem: Abbas doesn't have the will of the people backing him up (he lost the election) and all those pesky genocidal terrorist groups are still around. And they would be helped too by a Palestinian state. Of course Rosen forget about this.
He then takes a page out of Mearshimer's book and spells out the difference between the "good Jews" and the "bad Jews:"
"It is 2011 of course. 2012 will be an expensive year of political campaigning and this makes riling up some donors in the Jewish American community politically complicated. It should be noted that some enlightened Jewish Americans support a two state solution, peace, and even Mahmoud Abbas' play at the United Nations."If you're Jewish, no matter your political point of view, that's pretty freaking insulting. The vast majority of American Jews have always supported peace between Israel and its neighbors, far longer than the Palestinians have. That historical record is very clear. But as usual, if you don't toe Steve Rosen's line, you're "anti-peace." I guess the pot shots at Jews really doesn't end on the Huffington Post.

Ready for more ridiculous Huffington Post bias?
I remind you yet again of the pattern the Huffington Post produces when it comes to Israeli-Palestinian violence. But this is pretty blatant victimizing, even by Huffington Post standards.
As for the article itself, if you read it you will find that it says:

"A group of Palestinians wearing masks threw rocks at Israeli police officers and border guards Friday in East Jerusalem. Police officers gave chase as the rock-throwers fled the scene, apprehending one of them and taking him in for questioning."But in general the West Bank has been very quiet. Stories the HP Doesn't Cover: Being Gay in the IDF
No way in hell the Huffington Post covers this story of two gay IDF soldiers, who are out and proud in the Israeli military.
Read the rest. It's a remarkable story.
While the US military abolished their "Don’t Ask Don't Tell" policy (where soldiers must keep their sexual orientations a secret in order to continue to serve) just this year, the IDF has allowed openly gay men and women to serve in uniform 17 years prior.
Andrei Rubin, a gay man serving as a combat soldier for the Home Front Command's Search and Rescue unit, tries to explain why the IDF's repeal preceded the US military's by such a large gap. "The US – as big and democratic as it is – seems to have a more conservative spirit," he says. "In Israel, there is more of a familial vibe, the melting pot we live in forces us to accept each other."
Andrei moved to Israel when he was 10 years old, and came out to one of his friends on his 17th birthday. "He was very supportive when I told him and that gave me the courage to tell everybody. The first reaction is very important. My coming out was very successful and I didn’t get a very negative reaction," he shares.
However, coming out to his father was still extremely difficult for him. "My dad thought I was just young and confused," he tells. "His acceptance ended up coming via music. We were listening to 'Queen' together and talked about how Freddie Mercury was immensely successful regardless of his sexual orientation, and suddenly he was more understanding of it. The turning point was when I brought my boyfriend at the time home for dinner, and my parents warmly welcomed him, and spoke Hebrew most of the night regardless of the language barriers."

HuffPost's "Info" Page Gets it Wrong
The Huffington Post continued to work their readership into a frenzy about the Palestinian UN statehood bid by posting increasingly meaningless articles all with the same subject, including two about Palestinian protesters and now an article titled "UN General Assembly 2011: Palestinian Statehood Bid Explained," declaring that it would contain everything you need to know. Is that true? What do you think? Let's start with the first mistake:
"Alternatively, Abbas could decide to directly file a petition with the General Assembly to be recognized as a non-state observer member of the United Nations, much like the position the Vatican currently holds. "Actually, if I recall correctly the General Assembly can create a state observer member, which means that it is not part of the United Nations. That probably doesn't seem like a big difference but it is an important one. But I could be mistaken about this. Moving on: to an incredibly egregious mistake:
"The new Palestinian state would return to the borders Israel and Palestine shared before the War of 1967, which means the Palestinian state would include the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem."I don't know whether this is an intentional lie or just a ridiculous oversight, but everyone who has even a passing familiarity with the history knows that there was no Palestine in 1967 and there certainly wasn't a "border" between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Pretty blatant attempt by the HuffPo to rewrite the history of this conflict. Finally, our last mistake is more in what is unsaid than what is said. According to the Huffington Post, this is Israel's position:
"Israel considers the Palestinian initiative an attempt to delegitimize the country and bypass it in negotiations. Israelis are also concerned the move would allow Palestinians to challenge Israel in international organizations and courts."This is of course only half the story. Israel is also concerned about the future of the people living in the settlements, the fact that the Palestinians are going back on their word in the form of the Oslo Accords (which is also what America doesn't like), and oh yeah....they are worried that this might lead to another freaking war. Like when Israel left Gaza. But sure, HuffPo, you publish whatever you want. Don't worry about whether or not its true.

PLO Representative Is New Huffington Post Blogger
Who would have imagined that an organization that the US designated a terrorist organization in 1988 and who committed an assassination of two US diplomats would be given a voice on the Huffington Post? And yet that is exactly what has happened: Today's latest and greatest blog post on the subject of the Palestinian statehood drive is written by Maen Rashid Areikat, the Chief Representative of the PLO to the United States. Isn't that fantastic? Let's take a look at this article titled "UN Membership Enhances Peace," putting aside for a moment the somewhat laughable claim that "peace" is really what the PLO wants.
Areikat makes it all sound very palatable to Western audiences:
Palestinian Authority PLO to violate their own narrative can we?
Areikat makes it all sound very palatable to Western audiences:
"When Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas addresses the United Nations this week, it will signal a significant step forward in the continuing search for peace with Israel."After this he proceeds to blame everything on Israel, that negotiations aren't happening because of "Israeli intransigence" and not because of Abbas' preconditions, preconditions that even President Obama agreed were unreasonable. But we can't expect the "moderate"
"The Palestinians, represented by the PLO, have long sought to establish an independent, sovereign state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. The obvious question is simple: if not now, when? "Funny, but I seem to remember that when the PLO was first founded it was very clear that it was Israel they were seeking to "liberate" and that they held no claim to the West Bank or Gaza. Of course we can't expect the PLO to air their own dirty laundry, but even paying lip service in the vein of "I've changed, baby, now take me back" would have been appreciated. (Now cue all the trolls saying "history doesn't matter.")
"American aid has played a significant role in helping us to provide the Palestinian people with essential services, such as health and education, and in supporting our economy. Cutting off aid as a response to our diplomatic, non-violent move at the United Nations will have a serious impact on our ability to meet our obligations particularly in the security sphere."I wonder what would happen if, say, Michael Oren got on the Huffington Post and explained why American aid to Israel was so important. I'd imagine it would lead to about a thousand comments screaming "cut off the aid!!!!" But really that's besides the point. As you will see, Areikat tries to make the point that Palestine is a state ready for its independence. But how exactly is a people on welfare (and they are) supposed to make the case in front of the United Nations that they are ready for statehood? Answer: They can't, but will anyway because their Arab brothers will always back them up. And furthermore, Americans can do whatever they want with our aid, and seeing as how this whole statehood bid is a big middle finger to America, they deserve what they get.
"This is a turbulent time in our region and the United States has always been supportive of a people's right to self-determination."Technically they already fulfilled their right of self-determination when the Palestinian Authority was created. But Areikat is hardly the first Huffington Post blogger to misunderstand what self-determination means.

News the HP Doesn't Cover: Israeli Baby Hurt
Can you imagine the Huffington Post covering this story:
"Hundreds of Palestinians clashed with Israeli security forces in several locations in the West Bank on Wednesday, as the Palestinian Authority launched its official statehood celebrations across West Bank cities.
A 16-month-old Israeli baby suffered light injuries when a stone struck her head in a riot between Tapuah and Migdalim junctions. She was taken to Schneider Hospital in Petah Tikva. Three Palestinians were arrested during clashes, and an Israeli citizen was lightly injured from stones hurled at him while he was travelling near the West Bank city of Halhul."So much for those "harmless rock throwers" huh?

HuffPost Blogger Attacks Israel's Legitimacy
Another day, another blogger writes an article attacking Israel's legitimacy and the Huffington Post proudly publishes it. This time, it's Taufiq Rahim and his article is "Israel's Legitimacy Flows Through Palestine". Here's some nice quotes from the article, emphasis by me:
It's also fascinating to me that Palsbarists like Rahim here think that it's a legitimate threat to say that the Palestinians can just "switch" to arguing for a bi-national democratic state. This might have been a legitimate threat 50 years ago, before the birth of the Palestinian national movement. The Palestinians might have had a case to say "we're Israeli and we want to live in Israel", but not anymore. Not when (as the Palestinian supporters so frequently brag) they have 100+ countries supporting their desire for their own state. Those countries won't just "switch" at the drop of a hat solely because the Palestinian "destroy Israel" movement decided to switch tactics, unless the Arab oil lobby is more powerful than we thought.
At the end of the day, though, the Huffington Post is giving voice to a blogger threatening to destroy Israel's legitimacy. Shameful.
Israeli officials have been pseudo-confidently telling whoever will listen that the Palestinian pursuit for recognition at the United Nations is an affront to the peace process. Didn't the Palestinians know that their legitimacy -- and the creation of their state -- flows through Israel? At some point in the last couple of years the mainstream Palestinian political leadership finally emerged out of Plato's cave and answered that rhetorical question: It's Israel's legitimacy that flows in fact through Palestine.Let me sum up this article for you: Israel better let the Palestinians have a state, or else. This seems to be the far left rhetoric version of the Hamas threats of destroying Israel. I wonder what MJ Rosenberg would say about this article.
The claim that the Palestinian effort at the UN seeks to discredit the State of Israel is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. In fact it is Israel's future legitimacy that derives from the creation of a Palestinian state. The longer its political leaders procrastinate, the more tenuous its legitimacy as a democratic and viable state becomes.
Moreover, by rejecting the current Palestinian attempt to enshrine a two-state solution at the United Nations, Israel risks opening the pandora's box of what's next. Who is to say that the Palestinian leadership in the face of a lack of progress won't switch to backing a bi-national democratic state à la South Africa? In the eyes of the world -- which is generally supportive including in U.S. popular opinion of the Palestinian attempt at recognition -- how legitimate would the State of Israel be without a Palestine?
It seems that both Israel and the U.S. have already made up their minds regarding the vote this week. However, this issue will not disappear and will continue to linger. The Palestinian leadership is trying to firmly establish the legitimacy of the two state solution and the existence of Israel. The question remains will Israel undermine its own legitimacy in response?"
It's also fascinating to me that Palsbarists like Rahim here think that it's a legitimate threat to say that the Palestinians can just "switch" to arguing for a bi-national democratic state. News the HP Doesn't Cover: Violence Starts
In between all the breathless printing of articles about PA-Israel-Obama-UN, the Huffington Post has yet to cover this story:
"Around 40 Palestinians clashed with IDF forces near Beit Omar, and dozens of others rioted near the Qalandiya checkpoint.Violence has already started, yet I'm sure to the Huffington Post readership it will be a big surprise should things get worse.
Some rioters set tires on fire and stoned security forces, who used crowd-control measures to control the scene, including sonic cannons and tear gas. No injuries or damage were reported."

Bombing in Turkey: Israel Immediately Blamed
The major headline yesterday in the Huffington Posts' "World" section was that there was a bombing in Turkey's capital that killed three people. The comments in and of themselves were informative, including quite a few that indicated Turkey "had it coming" because of its treatment of minority groups. But of course within those were our buddy "anti-Zionists" who immediately pointed the finger at their favorite punching bag:
And yes, in case you were wondering, these are the same people who still don't think that the Itamar Massacre was committed by Palestinians.

Holy Land Trust Arrives on the Huffington Post
Sami Awad is a Huffignton Post blogger who has currently written four articles for them, three of which are about Palestinians and "nonviolence." That would be the Palestinian definition of nonviolence by the way, and not the everybody else definition of it. Anyway, Mr. Awad is the director of the Holy Land Trust. Maybe you've heard of them: They're the guys who encourage "activists" to lie their way into Israel, and who organize "protests" that involve tearing down the security barrier. So now that we have established just exactly what kinds of things Mr. Awad supports, let's get to his wonderfully hypocritical article.
As usual, Mr. Awad tries to set himself up as the latest edition of the Pandela, talking about how much Gandhi inspired him. He talks about his "uncle" Mubarak (not the President of Egypt) who inspired him to behave like Gandhi, and that's where we get our first half-truth:
But to be honest I don't want to beat up on Mubarak too much, as he seems like the real deal. His nephew on the other hand, I am less sure about, given the nature of his organization. If you go to their website you will find that they believe "the Palestinian people are experiencing the repercussions of 60 years of occupation." In other words, all of Israel is occupied territory, Israel has no right to exist, and the Palestinians should keep "resisting" until the rights of the Jewish people are revoked. That doesn't sound much like Gandhi to me, does it? The proof is in the pudding, which is why statements like this from Awad:

"In 1988 Mubarak Awad, who became known as the "Palestinian Gandhi," was arrested and deported by the Israeli authorities."Really? Just like that? Those mean ol' Israelis deported this great guy for no reason at all? Oh wait no he became a US citizen and was only there on a tourist visa. And that is why the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that he didn't have the "right" to stay there, though he claimed he had the "right" to stay in the place of his birth. Sure, whatever. The rules don't apply to Palestinians, we got it.

"If my engagement as a Palestinian in nonviolence does not have in it the expression of love to those that hate and persecute me, then I cannot call such actions "nonviolent."Are so disgustingly hypocritical. Especially when you consider further that people like Mr. Award will never criticize Hamas or any hatred that doesn't come out of the mouths of Jews. For all his high handed language, what it comes down to is that Mr. Award is just another propagandist, saying what his audience wants to hear so that they'll get on his side. Gandhi would be so proud.

MJR Rhetoric Comment of the Day
I came across a comment today that made me think of MJ Rosenberg and his rhetoric about AIPAC "controlling" Congress and all of the "Israel firsters" around there. The new comment, made by an HPer and receiving 7 favorites, takes that rhetoric to the next level:
Key phrase: "The Jewish lobby in the Congress control every policy we have with their money and bribes during the election."
This comment makes the line between AIPAC having "too much influence" over the US government and Jews controlling America with their money even harder to determine. This user explicitly states the Jewish aspect of the control over the government (rather than the Zionist or Israel aspect) but he covers himself with criticizing only "the lobby". And then there's the angle of the control being only because of money, something right out of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
I would be interested to know what MJ Rosenberg thinks of this comment.

Merely Anti-Zionist Comments of the Day
On a thread about the Palestinian UN bid:
Now of course, this makes one wonder what exactly this story has to do with Israel and the Palestinians. Since, you know, Israel and Jewish people have nothing to do with each other. Since Zionism does not equal Judaism. And anti-Zionism is not anti-Semitism. Right?
Similarly:
I don't understand. What does "chosen country" means? Because I thought we were talking about the "Zionist state" of Israel, which had nothing to do with Jews.

Breakdown of HuffPo Bloggers On UDI
As of last night, here is the ratio of Huffington Post bloggers writing pro-UDI articles vs anti-UDI articles:
In numbers, that's 6 against vs 14 in favor. I didn't count impartial articles but did count more than one article with the same subject by the same author.
Update: Of course by now it has changed. I have counted three in favor and one against from the time I made the chart. So change it in your mind accordingly.

We've got a fun new interactive activity for you today on Huffington Post Monitor. Below is a comment from the HP that was deleted and a reply to it. Based on the reply, and the fact that the comment was deleted, speculate on what the comment might be! It was posted on one of the dozens of threads about the upcoming Palestinian statehood bid.
All right, so what comment is a) so bad that it would be deleted by the HP moderators and b) if a word in it is changed to "Zionists" it's acceptable to an HP audience? Let's hear your thoughts in the comments section.

Anti-Zionists Vs. Rabbi Yonah
It's always informative to see how the anti-Zionist mind works. For this example, Rabbi Yonah Bookstein wrote an article about the Egyptian riot at the Israeli embassy, comparing it to a pogrom. The article itself is long, detailed and very informative, so I suggest you check it out on its own. But here is how the Huffington Posters responded:
Now although "pogrom" is a loaded term, this time I felt it applies. The people in the embassy legitimately felt like they were going to die. Besides, if the anti-Zionists can compare a group of settlers spray painting a house to a pogrom, this certainly applies. Now let's see how Rabbi Yonah responded:
Hm. Well played. Gracie, your response?
How typical. You see, most people, when they have been proven wrong, admit that they were wrong and (if you're lucky) will apologize for insulting their opponents. These guys, on the other hand, immediately switch the topic to something else to try and turn their loss into yet another anti-Israel talking point. Still, good for Rabbi Yonah for not backing down.

Narwani Vs Zogby Round 2
It's happening again! James Zogby has written a new blog post on the Huffington Post. What is the topic you ask? Just kidding, you don't have to ask, because it's James Zogby, so of course he'll be writing about Arab opinion. And just like before, Sharmine "Dignity Rockets" Narwani has a problem with what he said. Let's take a look shall we?
This is particularly strange because if you read the Zogby article, you will find that it's pretty much entirely a narrative that Narwani would want to hear: American's aren't hearing Arab voices, America is controlled by AIPAC, the Palestinian issue is the biggest deal in the Middle East, and so forth. Yet Narwani still felt it was necessary to go after Zogby in such a personal way. I also felt like her off topic shill for her article about Turkey was funny.

Great HP Blog Post by Avi Benlolo
Great article on the Huffington Post by Avi Benlolo, short and sweet (emphasis added by me):
World leaders are bracing themselves this week for a storm at the United Nations to be unleashed by the Palestinian Authority in its demand for a Palestinian state.
Visiting with community leaders in Toronto, Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, Avigdor Lieberman stressed that Western nations need to understand that Israel is on the front lines defending Western democracy. "Our security problem is your security problem... if you want to survive, you must support us. The Jewish state is fighting for the entire western world" Lieberman said.
Surrounded by hostile Arab countries, Israel is indeed on the front lines of the fight to preserve fundamental Western values of democracy, freedom and human rights. Even with the Arab Spring now taking hold in parts of the Middle East, there are few emerging signs that rights and freedoms are taking hold -- particularly as they relate to women and homosexuals.
Some hoped the Arab Spring would liberate the Muslim world from its incessant hatred of Israel and true peace would take hold in the Middle East. But the situation looks grim especially after the last couple of weeks that saw a diplomatic tussle -- Turkey expelled the Israeli ambassador; the Israeli embassy in Cairo was torched and its diplomats airlifted home; and as a 'precautionary measure,' Israel recalled its ambassador to Jordan.
The Palestinian's ultimate vision, said Lieberman is to "destroy the Jewish state of Israel." The Palestinians have given Israel little reason to think otherwise. Surely, if they wanted a peaceful resolution comprised of a two-state solution they would embrace Israel rather than unapologetically refuse to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.
The Palestinians, Lieberman said, have rebuffed every offer given to them for an independent state, including the Camp David Summit in 2000 (where over 91 per cent of the West Bank and 100 per cent of Gaza was offered to Arafat) and recently, a more extensive offer by the Olmert/Livni government was rejected by current Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas. Even Ariel Sharon tried a different approach in 2005 by painfully vacating Gaza and uprooting Israeli towns to help the Palestinians see their dream of a state.
Like many Israelis, Lieberman believes that everything has been tried and that Israel must "change its concept entirely." What that concept might be will depend on what happens at the UN this week.
But it is unclear what the Palestinians will gain. They have already refused every overture made to them for a Palestinian state, including the 1947 UN partition plan for a Jewish and a Palestinian state. Ironically, unable to take Israel by force, they are running back to the same world body they rejected 64 years ago.
What is clear however is that they still want the whole enchilada. Maybe one day they will learn what every three-year-old already knows -- how to share.Refreshing to see the Huffington Post is allowed unapologetically pro-Israel blog posts on its site, even if it is published on HuffPost Canada (?).

How Not to Defend Genocide
Stanley Weiss published a no-holds-barred article about Turkey's Prime Minister Erdogan on Friday, calling him out for many things he has done wrong, including his country's refusal to recognize the Armenian Genocide. Naturally the Huffington Posters came out in force to defend him, and it's always interesting to see how they will defend the Armenian Genocide. Particularly since in this thread the tactics were so numerous and varied. Let's jump right in shall we?
"It Doesn't Matter"
Oh, really? The Armenians and the Turks kissed and made up? No, not really, as it turns out, I haven't gotten that impression. Besides that, when I was in Jerusalem there were still a lot of Armenian activists there campaigning for Turkey to fess up what they have done. So which is more likely: a hardcore anti-Zionist is lying, or the Armenians have forgiven the Turks against all odds? That's what I thought.
"It Wasn't Us"
As I believe we have discussed before, if the Turks really are completely innocent of the crime of the Armenian Genocide, then why won't they recognize it as such? Hm? That's what I thought. And actually MarcEdward's comment is doubly insulting, because he's asking the Armenians to just forget about the monstrous crime that was done to them for practical reasons. I'm sure it has nothing to do with his new found love for Turkey.
The Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theory
Isn't it amazing what the Huffington Posters will dig up? For those of you who don't know already, rense.com is a famously conspiracy theory laden website, including anti-Jewish ones. Still, it's informative that Huffington Posters will blame the Jews for just about anything, and the Huffington Post will be happy to give them a platform for it.,
The Pointing Finger
As we discussed before, this would be a valid point on its own. But consider: If "the ADL and its ilk" had lobbied successfully for America and Israel to recognize the Armenian Genocide and in doing so caused the West to lose Turkey as an ally, what would these Huffington Posters be saying? I'm guess probably not "good job for standing up for the Armenians." Nope, they'd be blaming "the ADL and its ilk" for causing Israel to lose a friend. Hypocrisy that never ends, apparently.
The Red Herring
As the Huffington Posters are so quick to tell us, "stuff that happens in the past doesn't matter." And of course America did recognize the Native American Genocide as such and did make reparations, even though they probably weren't enough. Either way, stay on topic.
The (Other) Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theory
Wah wah wah. Someone I don't like has said something I disagree with on my favorite website. Boo hoo hoo. Maybe ranting about AIPAC will make me feel better. Sob.
The Personal Attack
One size fits all.
And that's how Huffington Posters defend a genocide.
