Employee Fired for Insulting Muslims, HPers Support Firing

Longtime readers will remember the great martyrdom of Helen Thomas, and how the Huffington Post readership and bloggership came out to defend her comments of ethnic cleansing in the Middle East. Today, something equally terrible and provocative occurred: a Wal-Mart employee posted something mean about Muslims on Facebook and was consequently fired.

Naturally, because the Huffington Post readership believes in the American values of free speech no matter who is offended, they stood up for the Wal-Mart employee.

Just kidding, they totally agreed he should be fired:

For the record, we here at HPM believe a company has the right to fire any employee for saying offensive things, we're just calling out the readership here for consistent standards.

  1. While I agree with your pieces most of the time, I think you are wrong in this instance. The vile Helen Thomas was offering a political opinion. Moreover, she was an Arab and did have a dog in the fight. The Facebook poster is just a pure bigot. He hunts and kills for the fun of it. The Facebook poster is, based on this instance alone, the more disgusting individual.

Ironically, having said that, Thomas deserved to be fired while the Facebook poster did not. Their jobs were completely different in nature.

Hey guys we've started to employ a slight comment policy. We used to have completely open comments but then people abused it. So our comment policy is such: No obvious trolling or spamming. And be warned: unlike the Huffington Post we actually enforce our comment policy.
